One Specification per site

Why each site gets one Quadrano tag holding one Specification, and how to split by hostname or path.

One Quadrano tag per site, holding one Specification. This page explains why, and how to handle several sites or sections.

What you'll need: a browser. You may already have your Specification open in Quadrano Local, or a tag installed in Google Tag Manager.

What you'll have at the end: one tag per site, each checking the right Specification, and no ignored tags.

Why one tag?

Quadrano installs once per page load. The first Specification to load stays in charge. If a second Quadrano tag fires on the same page, it logs a warning and checks nothing.

So each site gets one tag, and each tag holds one Specification. Two tags on one page mean one of them does no checking. If you see "Two Specifications loaded" in the Console, that is what happened — see Troubleshooting.

Several sites or sections

Split by hostname. That is the reliable way. Give each hostname its own tag: one GTM container per hostname, or one Custom HTML tag per hostname, firing on Initialization – All Pages with a hostname condition. The hostname is known before any other tag pushes.

Split by path only when every page is a full page load. A path condition works for separate pages, but not inside a single-page app.

Single-page apps

The Specification loaded at Initialization does not change on client-side navigation. A path split inside a single-page app is not supported.

Until Quadrano supports splitting a single page by path, the only workaround is one permissive Event Definition: make the Attributes that differ optional, and relax their rules. You lose strictness — the Console then accepts pushes it would otherwise flag. This is a trade-off, not a promise of future support.

Two sites in Quadrano Local

Each Quadrano Local file holds its own copies of its Event Definitions. Two sites means two files.

Quadrano Local keeps one Specification per browser at a time, so:

  1. Build the first site's Specification, then choose Export file to save it.
  2. Choose Start a new Specification for the second site, then Export file again.
  3. To go back to a site, choose Import file and open its file. Or keep the two files open in two browsers or profiles.
